I am sure that many of us have heard about collagen, but what exactly is it and what does it do for our bodies?

As defined by the medical dictionary, collagen is “any family of extracellular, closely related proteins occurring as a major component of connective tissue, giving it strength and flexibility.” (TheFreeDictionary.com,2017).

There are various different types of collagen fibres that are found in the body. Collagen is a type of protein that is found in both humans and animals (bovine collagen).

Collagen fibres in the human body are found specifically in the bones, cartilage, the teeth, the skin – which contains about 30% of collagen, and it forms a protective lining around the organs, these linings are defined as basement membranes.

The main, overall function of collagen is to provide elasticity, support and strengthening agents for the skin; although each different type of collagen has its own specific function for the body.

Collagen clearly plays a significant role in our bodies but what are the most beneficial aspects of collagen fibres?

Collagen has an important role in the health of both skin and hair. Naturally as we age our collagen stores begin to deplete, this leads to the appearance of wrinkles, loose skin and a loss of hair. This decline in collagen causes the skin to lose its elasticity, leading to more visible and increased chances of getting stretch marks and cellulite.

Collagen is essential for the joints in the body. A study conducted at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deconness Medical Centre, revealed that increased collagen relieves the pain that is experienced by individuals who suffer from arthritis, specifically, rheumatoid arthritis. Decreased collagen leads to joint degeneration and increased pain that is experienced through the various joint disorders.

Collagen has fitness and weight loss benefits as well. Collagen has been found to speed up your metabolism, which allows for better absorption of vital nutrients that are ingested and it contributes to gaining lean muscle instead of fat.

Pilates is described as a form of exercise that focuses on flexibility and strength, an alternative name for Pilates is physical mind method.

Pilates is a fully body workout that strengthens all the large muscle groups such as the back, buttocks and abdominal muscles. The strengthening of these main muscle groups is extremely important for reducing the risk of injury and correcting postural impairments. Through teaching the correct technique, the risk of both injury and postural problems is largely reduced.

Not only is Pilates a full body workout, but it incorporates all the fundamental aspects of a proper training programme, such as strength training, muscular endurance, flexibility, balance and proprioception.

Pilates is a fun and interesting way to keep active and healthy; due to the incorporation of the many muscle groups. It is a great way to keep fit, tone up or lose weight.

There are a vast array of medical benefits that are associated with Pilates such as a reduction in high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Pilates is extremely beneficial for people who have experienced injuries as it contributes to increased range of motion and flexibility around the affected joints. Pilates increases coordination, balance and strength whilst reducing stress.

There are a wide variety of exercises that you will encounter along your Pilates journey. The hundred exercise, is done lying on your back. Lift your head, neck and back as well as lifting your legs to a 45 degree angle. Place your hands beside your legs and raise them, then lower them continuously for 30 seconds.

The roll up is done for abdominal training and stretching of the spine. Lie on your back and extend your hands toward the ceiling. Tuck your chin in and slowly roll yourself up.

For a core and leg work-out the double straight leg stretch is the ideal exercise. Lie flat on your back. Hands placed behind your neck while it is relaxed. Slightly raise the upper portion of your back and slowly raise both legs up to a 45 degree angle, then slowly lower them.

A bridge, is done by lying on your back, shoulders relaxed. Bend your knees to 90 degrees. Slowly lift your hips towards the ceiling and hold for 5-10 seconds then relax and repeat.

The term whole foods is described as foods that have not been processed, they are one of the truest forms of the food source.

On a side note, the term whole foods should not be confused with the term organic foods, as they are vastly different. Whole foods refer to the natural characteristics of foods, while on the other hand, organic foods are foods that have been produced and manufacture via organic means.  Organic means refers to the production of foods that are free from the use of harmful toxins such as pesticides and chemicals.

The phrase organic food implies that the food produce this way, are not genetically modified. As described by the World Health Organisation “A genetically modified organism (plants and animals), is an organism in which their genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally”. World Health Organisation (WHO) May 2014.

The word whole foods can often get a little confusing, so what makes whole foods different from the everyday foods that we consume?

Whole foods generally refer to fruits, vegetables, all types of nuts, legumes and whole grain (fibre). It means consuming foods that look similar to the way they did whilst still growing in nature.

Whole foods are based around the concept of being healthier, they have been found to contain a lot more nutrients and less calories. Whole grain food have not been refined or processed, adding another health benefit. The simple idea behind whole food eating is to gain nutrients from the food itself; therefore eliminating the need for vitamins supplements and added preservatives.

Whole food eating is the idea of supplementing the unhealthy with the healthy. For example instead of eating a whole bag of chips, rather make a baked potato and spice it up with some garlic, spring onions and peppers or tomatoes.

Whole foods have a variety of benefits, from reducing risks associated with health diseases, to help keeping you in shape. Whole foods contain the natural elements in a plant; these elements are defined as Phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are produced via plants, they are their biological compounds. These compounds contribute to prevention and protective measures useful for the body.

Whole foods have been linked to the reduction of diabetes, heart disease and weight. The reduced risk of diabetes  associated with whole foods is due to the fact that that they contain more natural sugars, therefore, they contain less refined or unhealthy sugars, this in turns, decreases high blood sugar levels.

The reduction in the risk of heart diseases due to whole foods is seen via the fact that whole foods contain the right kind of fats; this reduces the collection of plaque that causes high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Whole foods could also contribute to the reduction of the obesity epidemic, as mentioned above, as they contain the right kinds of fats and furthermore, they are richer in fibre which allows you to feel fuller for a longer amount of time. This then aids in the process of weight loss.

In conclusion whole foods seem to be one of the best options when it comes to eating clean, staying in shape and keeping healthy.  Whole foods can also be home-grown; this gives you the peace of mind, knowing exactly how your foods have been produced.  

Sometimes it can be difficult to reach  adequate fibre levels as a lot of today's foods are processed and some of the natural fibres are lost during the process.
